Garage door remote compatibility: what actually has to match
A replacement remote needs to speak a radio protocol your opener receiver understands. Brand and appearance help identify the product, but they are not enough by themselves.
The shortest reliable decision path

Start with the opener, not the old remote shell
Read the manufacturer and model number from the motor unit. If XEKOV has a first-party source for that model, use the exact model page. If not, identify the learn button or protocol before ordering.
For Chamberlain-family openers, learn-button color is a strong clue
Current manufacturer compatibility tools group many Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Craftsman systems by colored learn buttons. White corresponds to newer Security+ 3.0 products; yellow to Security+ 2.0; purple/brown to Security+ 315 MHz; red/orange to Security+ 390 MHz; and green to the older billion-code family.

That is why two remotes that look alike can behave differently—and why a current universal accessory can work across several generations only when its specifications explicitly list all of those protocols.
Genie uses a different compatibility vocabulary
Genie’s current remote guidance centers on Intellicode. The G3T-R is listed for Genie Intellicode opener models, while older DIP-switch Genie systems require an accessory that explicitly supports fixed-code operation. Do not translate Chamberlain learn-button colors into Genie compatibility.
What “universal” means in practice
Universal should be read as “supports a published set of protocols,” not “works with everything.” Current Chamberlain CHU62 and LiftMaster L992U specifications enumerate Chamberlain-family generations plus selected Genie, Linear, Stanley, Wayne-Dalton, Guardian, Sommer and Ryobi protocols. If your exact protocol is not listed, do not assume compatibility.
Three examples
- White-button Chamberlain/LiftMaster: require an accessory that explicitly includes Security+ 3.0; an older Security+ 2.0-only remote is not enough.
- Yellow-button opener: a newer multi-generation remote can work when yellow-button Security+ 2.0 is explicitly listed.
- Genie Intellicode opener: use Intellicode compatibility, not a Chamberlain color match.
Best verification order
- Exact opener model and first-party documentation.
- Physical learn-button color or stated radio protocol.
- Remote manufacturer compatibility specification.
- Only then: programming instructions for that exact accessory.
